Getting Kids Pumped for School
Location: Horana, Sri Lanka
Dates: 10.9.-24.09.2011
Project description:
Together with Arosha Jayasundera, our local support and member of the Rotary Club, travel2change and the travelers will install a pump, water tank and pipes to connect a local school to its well. This will enable the children to have running water for drinking and sanitation. Our combined efforts will greatly improve the children’s health thus reducing the risk of dengue and other communicable diseases. The travelers will also educate the children and local community on the importance of purification and safe drinking water.
The aim is to provide a school with a running water facility which will hugely ease the children’s lives in addition to improving their health. The local community will also be made aware and taught the importance of using boiled or treated water for drinking. Travelers’ activities include:
- Help implementing the installation of pumps, tanks and pipes in the Pahala Naragala school
- Supporting with laying pipes, cement work and digging the ground
- Raising awareness in the local community about the importance of safe water and hygiene
- Fun learning activities combined with an educational program for the children
Arosha Jayasundera, former Rotary President and member of the local community, is the local host to the project. The local Rotary Club will support the project with additional funds and further bring its expertise from having been involved in helping other schools in the region with similar projects.
