Project description:
WAVES for Development is a non-profit organization which runs a Community Development Surf Project in Lobitos, Peru. The success of the pilot project in 2008 and positive response from the community led to continuation of programming organized by local youth leaders and a second group of Surf Voluntourists. Travel2change will assist in running a number of their activities to create life enriching experiences in this coastal community through education programs that help develop youth into healthy and empowered adults. The travelers will join local staff to teach local children water safety, beach management and of course how to surf. The project aims to include environmental conservation, social entrepreneurship and sustainable tourism classes with travelers as instructors and assistants in the ongoing programs. The cultural exchange, activities to increase a healthy living and teaching skills for life, is another great benefit of the program. The traveler’s activities during the project include:
- Participation in the education programs providing English lessons and support during ongoing courses
- Coordination of fun sports activities for the kids, including swim and surf classes, during and after school
- Organization of a beach clean-up to free the coast from litter
- Use individual’s traveler’s skills and knowledge to share with the children through a cultural exchange
